Getting Started on Cost-savings Initiatives

For maximum impact, cost savings initiatives are best started in January when there are a full 12 months in which to realize the gains. But, initiatives can only get underway when resources are available, solutions rise to the surface, and there are no fires that need immediate attention. So while January may be the best time to roll out cost-saving measures, the next best time is now (no matter what today's date is on the calendar).

5 Easy Ways to Get Started

  1. Identify high-volume micro end mills and ask us to provide a competitive quote. Since our tools have quantity-based pricing, we may be able to provide a lower per-tool price than the incumbent. By providing a direct match tool, it's low effort to replace the existing tool. That combination makes this a low-effort, high-reward place to start.
  2. Add or change coating. Depending on the material cutting, adding (or changing) coating may help to extend tool life. When tools last longer, you'll need to purchase less over the course of a year, you will reduce tool changes, and increase machine up-time - all of which can provide cost savings.
  3. Speed things up. In some applications, it may be possible to push the tools a bit harder. With higher speeds and feeds often comes higher heat, so be sure to consider whether adding or changing the coating is needed.
  4. Move to material- and application-specific design. General-purpose standard tools are often used when first considering production plans for a new product. After it moves to full-scale production (or when it's already there), it may be worth moving to one designed for the material and application
  5. Assess tool wear. Analyzing and understanding tool wear can help lead to design improvements that can extend tool life, improve surface finish, or alleviate secondary operations.
